Coca-Cola Japan Introduces Biodegradable Plastic Bags to Supermarkets

Starting on March 15, 2004, the Coca-Cola System in Japan introduced polyethylene (PE) bags made of oxo-biodegradable plastic for use at supermarkets. The bags are used at sales corners for a discount campaign in which customers use the bag to choose and carry several types of Coca-Cola products in 500 ml PET products offered for a single price.

The oxo-biodegradable plastics used for the bags are environment-friendly, as they eventually decompose into water and carbon dioxide. Coca-Cola is the first company in Japan to introduce this material nationwide.

The company has been promoting its unique environmental management system called the "eKO system" to actively reduce environmental impacts while improving business efficiency. The company sees the PE bag initiative as part of these efforts.
