On the occasion of the Eco Products 2003 Exhibition held in Tokyo in December 2003, a project named "T-Shirts for NPOs" was launched through the collaboration of nonprofit organizations that try to integrate environmental advocacy and art, and private companies that design and produce environmentally friendly products. The project aims to fund NPO activities, to give designers an opportunity to present their work, and T-shirt purchasers a chance to contribute to a good cause.

In the first design competition at the Eco Products 2003 Exhibition, 60 designs were submitted for six NPOs that had applied in advance to participate. Prize-winning designs were selected by voting at the exhibition site and a panel of judges consisting of NPO directors. They were then printed on T-shirts made of domestically-produced organic cotton and sold over the Internet since January 2004.

Any NPO can participate in the project if it agrees to purchase 20 of the T-shirts designed it. If the sale of T-shirts, priced at 3,000 yen or U.S.$28 each, exceeds 21 or more, 500 yen per shirt will be donated to the NPO, and a loyalty of 100 yen per shirt will be paid to the designer, respectively.

The next T-shirt design competition will be held at the Earth Day Tokyo 2004 event at Yoyogi Park on April 17 and 18.
