Toshiba Develops Palm-Sized Fuel Cell for Portable Devices

Keywords: Eco-business / Social Venture Energy Conservation Manufacturing industry

Toshiba Corporation announced on October 3, 2003 that it has succeeded in developing a palm-sized fuel cell for cellular phones and other portable devices. The prototype, having an output of one watt, is 100 x 60 x 30mm with a volume of 140 cc, and weighs 130 grams, including a cartridge of methanol fuel.

By adopting a dilution cycle system, longer hours of operation with a small amount of fuel have been achieved with this prototype. The system uses by-product water from chemical reactions to dilute the methanol to a concentration level appropriate for electrical power generation. It can operate for approximately 20 hours with a cartridge containing 25 cc of high-concentration methanol.

The company will continue its efforts to develop a smaller model and increase the power output to two watts, aiming to commercialize the product in 2005.
