On October 1, 2003, Tokyo Gas Co. started a low-priced service, called "TG Green Monitor," to manage energy data for commercial buildings. This new service remotely monitors the amount of energy consumed in the buildings and reports the data back through the Internet.

Recently, a growing number of companies are engaging in energy conservation in connection with acquiring ISO 14001 certification or releasing environmental reports. Meanwhile, in the face of today's economic stagnation and increased business competition, cost-cutting has become an urgent management issue, and this includes energy costs.

The "TG Green Monitor" service responds to these needs by offering an affordable way to measure, manage, and analyse energy usage. The main target of the services is commercial buildings such as offices, hospitals, hotels, and stores.

Tokyo Gas remotely monitors the amount of energy consumed, including gas and electricity, and continuously manages the monitoring data. It then creates graphs of energy consumption (daily, monthly, year-on-year, etc.) and puts them on the Internet so in an easy-to-read format.

Lower costs for remote monitoring and reporting systems has made it possible to offer such services at a low price. The basic plan starts at 100,000 yen (about U.S.$900) a year, including the monitoring and data management for both electricity and gas in one building.
