Sony EMCS Corporation installed a photovoltaic (PV) system to generate electricity at its East Japan CS Front Center located in Togane City, Chiba Prefecture on Nov. 26, 2003. The company is a leading electric manufacturing company in Japan and the provider of integrated services for the Sony Group, from procurement and manufacturing to customer service.

The generating capacity of the PV system is 200 kilowatts, making it one of the largest such systems in Japan, and equivalent to the electricity consumption of roughly 50 households.

The company has selected PV modules that are made with lead-free solder and designed to have lower environmental impacts when disposed. Environmentally friendly and state-of-the-art technologies have also been employed not only in the panels but also in the entire system. One example is a new method of mounting solar panels directly on the roof with special support brackets, which weigh less and use fewer resources than the steel chassis used in the past.
