Sharp Corp. to Produce Solar Cell Modules in Europe

Keywords: Eco-business / Social Venture Manufacturing industry Renewable Energy

Sharp Corporation, world's leading manufacturer of photovoltaic (PV) modules, will start producing PV modules at Sharp Manufacturing Company of U.K. (SUKM) in Wrexham, North Wales in spring 2004. The annual production capacity of solar cell modules at SUKM will be 20MW per year initially and will increase as demand grows.

Sharp has already started production in the U.S., and the company decided to start producing PV modules in Europe as its second overseas manufacturing base in expectation of further expansion of the European market.

As awareness of the need to conserve the global environment increases around the world, outstanding efforts by European countries, such as Germany, towards introducing renewable energy sources have triggered an upsurge in the demand for PV systems. Sharp aims to continue producing PV modules in Europe in view of upcoming regulations on recycling and reuse of solar cell modules under an EU directive.
