Japan's Ministry of the Environment recently released estimates of the market size and potential employment in the country's environmental businesses in the years 2000, 2010 and 2020.

The market for environmental businesses, considered to be worth 29.9 trillion yen (U.S.$251 billion) in 2000, is estimated to grow to 47.2 trillion yen (U.S.$397 billion) and 58.4 trillion yen (U.S.$491 billion) in 2010 and 2020, respectively. Similarly, the number of jobs is expected to increase from 769,000 in 2000 to 1.119 million in 2010 and 1.236 million in 2020.

The calculations are based on the OECD classification of environmental businesses in its 1999 manual on the environmental goods and services industry. These businesses are defined as "activities that produce goods and services to measure, prevent, limit, minimize or correct environmental damage to air, water and soil, as well as problems related to waste, noise and ecosystems."
