Japan Post to Collect Used Home PCs

Japan Post decided to use its parcel delivery service to collect used personal computers (PCs) from homes starting from October 1, 2003, in cooperation with Sankyu Inc., a logistic company. The 21 participating domestic and overseas computer manufacturers, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and the Ministry of the Environment had been exploring possible methods of collection, because the Law for Promotion of Effective Utilization of Recyclable Resources requires manufacturers to recycle used PCs from homes, as well as businesses,starting from October.

PCs eligible for collection include unwanted home-use notebook and desktop computers with monitors. A user will need to contact the relevant manufacturer to receive a parcel label. After packing the PC and applying the label, the user takes it to the nearest post office. Over 20,000 post offices nationwide, with the exception of smaller post offices, will provide this service. Sankyu will prepare and send out the parcel labels, check the collected computers, and deliver them to the manufacturers' recycling facilities.

The participating PC manufacturers are as follows (in alphabetical order): Apple Computer, Casio Computer, Dell Computer, Eizo Nanao, Fujitsu, Hewlett-Packard Japan, Hitachi, IBM Japan, Matsushita Electric Industrial, Mitsubishi Electric Information Technology, NEC, NEC-Mitsubishi Electric Visual Systems, Nihon Unisys, Oki Electric Industry, Ricoh, Sanyo Electric, Seiko Epson, Sharp, Sony, Sotec and Toshiba. These 21 companies are members of the "PC 3R Project" of the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association.
