The Japan Expanded Polystyrene Recycling Association, or JEPSRA, recently released a status report on expanded polystyrene (EPS) recycling for fiscal 2002.

The report says that about 176,000 tonnes of EPS were collected nationwide, of which 64.7 percent was recycled, which the association detailed as 39.1 percent into material recycling, and 25.6 percent into thermal energy. Meanwhile, 10.6 percent was incinerated and 24.7 percent was buried in landfills.

Total EPS shipments during the year amounted to 197,000 tonnes, of which 57 percent was used in containers, 29 percent in cushioning materials, and 14 percent in building and civil engineering materials.

The JEPSRA aims to raise the recycling rate to 70 percent by 2005, with 40 percent through material recycling and 30 percent as thermal energy.
