Toppan Printing Co., a major printing company in Japan, acquired a Chain of Custody (CoC) certification from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) for the processing and distribution of its wood products on February 6, 2003. The company already obtained the CoC certification for its commercial printed materials in May 2002.

The latest CoC authorization enables Toppan to use the FSC logo on its wood processing products made of 100 percent FSC-certified logs. The company plans to utilize such certified wood products not only as part of the raw material for making point-of-purchase (POP) advertising materials, premiums and novelties, but also for fixtures, furniture and fittings used at company showrooms, exhibitions and retail outlets.

FSC certification is an international system that covers two areas: "Forest Management Certification" that certifies properly managed forests, and "Chain of Custody Certification" that certifies wood and wood products coming from such certified forests. To obtain the certification, applicants are required to keep certified wood separate from non-certified wood in the process of fabrication and distribution.

Toppan expects additional sales of 500 million yen (about US$4.2 million) for fiscal 2003, hoping to increase orders related to FSC-CoC certified items of both commercial printing and wood products.
