Earthworm-Compost Instructors Wanted

Keywords: Ecosystems / Biodiversity Reduce / Reuse / Recycle University / Research institute

Starting at the end of January 2003, the Science Educational Foundation of Japan began recruiting 20 "earthworm-compost instructors" who will promote earthworm-based food waste recycling and environmental education. Registered instructors will receive "CAN-O-WORMS," a garbage-composting device containing 1,000 dung worms.

The instructors are expected to provide environmental education using earthworms to assist environmental learning in classes and at events. They will demonstrate the role of earthworms in the soil ecosystem to decompose organic matter into fertile soil, as well as the resource cycle and human responsibility for treating living creatures.

The foundation also recognizes the value of earthworms, which have contributed for 400 million years to nature's recycling system by consuming dead leaves and plant roots to create rich soil. An earthworm research group was set up aiming to promote practical environmental education programs for schools, homes and society. The group has been developing and promoting hands-on teaching materials as well as conducting earthworm research.
