Mos Food Services, a Japanese hamburger store chain, announced that the company will test delivering food ingredients and picking up vegetable waste using the same truck.

This experimental project is supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries as part of a plan to invent technology for food distribution systems. Mos Food Services and Ajinomoto Logistics Corporation, the foodstuff distribution company for all Mos Burger shops, will jointly perform the test for the five shops in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, from February 3 through 20 March 2003. The two companies will use a special vehicle that will mix and compress vegetable wastes while running. The vehicle was developed by Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation and ShinMaywa Industries.

When bringing food ingredients to each shop, the delivery company will collect vegetable waste from the kitchens for a fee, and deliver them to a processing center while mixing and compressing the waste. Through further drying and processing, compost is produced, and the shops where the waste originated will buy the compost for flower growing kits to give away to customers.

Mos Food Services, which has directly contracted with farmers to supply all its shops, has been purchasing vegetables grown with reduced pesticide and chemical fertilizer use since 1997. Meanwhile, the company has also been studying how to deal with the garbage from the shops' kitchens. This experiment is a part of the study.
