Oki's New Accounting System to Enhance Management Efficiency and Reduce Burden on Environment

Keywords: Manufacturing industry Policy / Systems Reduce / Reuse / Recycle

Oki Electric Industry Co. in Japan intends to reduce the number of accounting slips by 49 percent (from 710,000 to 360,000) and reports by 78 percent (from 1,483,000 to 324,000) through a new accounting system implemented in July 2002.

By changing the slips and reports from paper to electronic media the company expects to reduce the work of handwriting and retyping, thereby improving the efficiency of data entry and preparation of management reports by about 20 percent. The company estimates that this is equivalent to saving the workload of 45 people.

A cost savings of 7 million yen (about U.S.$57,000) is expected from the reduced use of paper. In addition, savings in system maintenance and labor costs are estimated at 100 million yen ($800,000) in FY2002 and 400 million yen ($3.3 million) per year in FY2003 and thereafter. Thus, Oki plans to recover the system implementation cost of 900 million yen ($7.3 million) by the end of FY2004.

This system was introduced with the aims of saving costs and reducing the burden on the environment as well as enhancing management efficiency and enabling faster decision making.
