On August 21, Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MLIT) decided on a policy which would call for a two-year exemption of automobile acquisition tax and auto tax imposed on fuel cell vehicles that auto manufacturers aim to release by the end of 2002.

Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. are planning to begin the sales of fuel cell vehicles within the year, and MLIT aims to promote popularization of fuel cell vehicles by the tax reduction and exemption.
