Tama City (located in the Tokyo metropolitan region in Japan) recently introduced environmental accounting. The city reports that as a result of 4.68 billion yen (about U.S.$40 million) in expenditures for the environment in fiscal 2001, significant achievements were made, including 135 hectares (about 334 acres) of forests saved from cutting, carbon dioxide emissions reductions of 10,500 tonnes, waste reduction of 4,280 tonnes, and an increase by 2,290 tonnes in the collection of recycables, leading to 90 million yen (about U.S.$750,000) in savings for the city.
