Hemp Potential Attracts Attention

Keywords: Eco-business / Social Venture Manufacturing industry NGO / Citizen Renewable Energy

Many attempts have been made across Japan in recent years to explore the potential uses of hemp. Events offering test-rides of automobiles powered by hemp oil and the growing popularity of hemp beer are merely a hint the potential of this plant.

Hemp, an annual plant, grows about 3 meters high and 3 centimeters in stem diameter. Originating in central Asia, hemp has been grown in Japan since ancient times, and nowadays, all over the world. This plant is fast-growing, capable of repeated cultivation, and highly insect-repellent, eliminating the need for pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Oil extracted from this plant has the potential to serve as an alternative fuel for diesel engines. It also has a variety of uses as clothing, paper, building materials, and even spices and food ingredients as well as soaps and cosmetics.
