Ministry of the Environment Searches from the Sky for Illegally-Dumped Industrial Waste

Keywords: Environmental Technology Government Reduce / Reuse / Recycle

Japan's Ministry of the Environment will develop unique using helicopters and satellites technology to find industrial waste that has been dumped illegally in mountain and forest areas. The waste, which causes groundwater pollution and other environmental problems, is often covered by soil and vegetation, making it difficult to find the waste from the ground. Image-analysis technology using data transmitted from helicopter-mounted radar and satellites will help locate the waste. The system is expected to be commercially available in around 2007.

Japan reportedly has 10 million cubic meters of illegally-dumped waste. This technology will help identify the location of such waste and help in its proper disposal.
