Making "Fukuoka-style" Landfills in China

Keywords: Climate Change Environmental Technology Local government Reduce / Reuse / Recycle

Fukuoka City will send personnel to China to provide technical advice on the construction of waste disposal landfill sites with lower environmental impacts. With the Fukuoka system, a number of drainpipes are laid at the bottom of landfills to reduce groundwater contamination caused by water infiltration, and to reduce the generation of methane gas emissions, one of the causes of global warming. This method has been adopted as a standard approach in Japan's domestic landfills and has also been used for landfills overseas, for instance, in Iran and Malaysia.

The personnel will be involved in the construction of landfills in three cities in China, based on a memorandum signed between the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) Fukuoka Office and the Chinese government.
