Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. has started to develop offshore wind farms. Offshore wind power capitalizes the greater availability of space to build and stronger winds found over water than on land. It appears to hold great promise in Japan, with its high population density and the difficulties in finding sites for land-based wind plants. The company plans to complete its first wind plant by 2007 with a generation capacity of roughly 12,500 kW.
