Fujitsu Introduces Geothermal Heat Extraction System at Nagano Plant

Major Japanese electronics manufacturer Fujitsu Ltd. flipped the switch on a geothermal heat extraction system at its Nagano plant at the beginning of January 2012, the first attempt for a Fujitsu Group company to utilize natural energy to power water heater equipment for air conditioners in a plant.

The new system includes 31 heat-extraction pipes embedded in the ground to extract geothermal heat to generate hot water and supply water heater equipment for air conditioners in clean rooms that run 24 hours a day. By utilizing geothermal heat, which excels in terms of its stability and cost, Fujitsu expects to cut its annual fuel consumption by about 47 kiloliters (crude oil equivalent) and annual carbon dioxide emissions by about 120 tons compared to the existing system.

After verifying the effectiveness and performance of the new system, the company plans to expand the use of geothermal heat extraction at the Nagano plant and explore applications of the system for use at other Fujitsu Group locations.
