Units of vegetable gardens were installed by two citizen groups in the green area in front of Kamakura City Hall in Kanagawa Prefecture on December 21, 2011, to make the area look nicer. .The edible landscape, topiaries and green benches were arranged jointly by "The Group to Make Kamakura Beautiful," which works to preserve nature and the environment of the historic city, and "Greens Art Kamakura," whose aim is to create a town full of green and art. They agreed to cooperate based on a request from the city which called for green supporters of the main building.

This new landscape will benefit children, as watching vegetables grow first hand will help them take more interest in food and lead to food education. It will also give adults the opportunity to stop and talk about food, and also expected to raise awareness about a natural circulation society, based on self-sufficiency and local production for local consumption.
