The Chubu Regional Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport released on January 27, 2010, the results of an experiment that designated part of a road for bicycles for four weeks in Nagoya City starting from October 26, 2009. Following the test period, about 90 percent of bicycle users, about 80 percent of pedestrians and 70 percent of drivers said that they thought it would be good to promote bicycle lanes going forward.

A section of about 800 meters in length on Sakura Dori, a part of Japan National Route 19, designated as an environmental model area with bicycle lanes in 2007 had often become dangerous because of the mixing of pedestrian and bicycle traffic. This experiment was carried out for 320 meters of this section, with one lane of the four-lanes of the road designated for bicycles only. Bicycle riders, who usually rode on the sidewalk, were separated from pedestrians, the traffic volume of bicycles was checked, and a survey of car drivers, bicycle users and pedestrians was conducted.

There was no major change in car traffic due to the reduction of one lane, and 90 percent of car drivers responded that they did not feel a big impact. In addition, 85 percent of bicycle users said that it was easy to travel, and about 75 percent of pedestrians and about 90 percent of bicycle users said that safety was enhanced.

The bureau plans to build a bicycle lanes on this same section in FY 2010.
