Nature Conservation Promoted in Kansai Region

The Nature Conservation Society of Osaka was established in 1976 mainly by citizens participating in activities aimed at protecting local tidelands through the construction of a wild bird park and preserving ecosystems in and around rivers. The Society is still managed by citizens who love their local natural environment and hope to protect and nurture it.

Its executive officers play a central role in planning and executing a wide range of activities, in cooperation with volunteers and based on decisions made by a general assembly. These activities include: conservation, research and studies of satoyama "village forest" woodlands, planning and proposing conservation projects, responding to land development issues, volunteer training and nature watching events and other events designed to familiarize people with the natural environment, organization of commissioned projects, and providing lecturers and staff. The Society also publishes a monthly magazine, "City and Nature" and has a website.

In this way, the Society provides various activities and opportunities that encourage local citizens to participate and communicate. In partnership with local members and their friends or with other local groups, the Society actively contributes to nature conservation efforts in Japan's Kansai Region (centered in Osaka), hoping to conserve and restore larger areas of natural environment through various collaborations that reach beyond the present framework of its own members and partner groups.
