On January 19, 2005, Kirin Brewery Co. concluded the "Lake Biwa Afforestation Partnership Agreement" with the Otaki Forestry Association (Taga Town, Inukami County, Shiga Prefecture) in the presence of the governor of Shiga prefecture.

The company agreed to support the afforestation of about 820 hectares managed by the association in the upper watershed of the Inukami River east of Lake Biwa. This is the first joint activity between a forest owner and a company based on the "Lake Biwa Afforestation Ordinance," enacted by Shiga Prefecture in April 2001. While promoting afforestation, Kirin, Shiga Prefecture and the Otaki Forestry Association also plan to raise awareness among residents around Lake Biwa and along the Yodo River, which flows out of Lake Biwa.

The company has been promoting various activities to protect water resources for its breweries. In 2005, it aims to give high priority to this kind of activity on the national level.
