Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corp. (MFTBC), one of Japan's leading commercial vehicle manufacturers and an integral part of Daimler Trucks, unveiled its concept model Canter E-CELL with battery-electric drive system at the 63rd IAA (Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung) Commercial Vehicles, an international motor show held in Hanover, Germany, from September 23 to 30, 2010.
The Canter E-CELL, based on the Canter 3S13 (gross vehicle weight of 3.5 tons) developed for European countries, is equipped with lithium-ion batteries (40 kilowatt-hours) and an electric motor (output of 70 kilowatts, maximum torque of 300 Newton meters). The vehicle can travel about 120 kilometers after about six hours of charging using a 380-volt outlet.
Mitsubishi Fuso released the Canter Eco Hybrid, a light-duty truck featuring a parallel diesel hybrid system, in July 2006 in Japan, and as of October 2010, had sold 1,000 units in Japan, Ireland, Australia and Hong Kong. The company and Daimler expect the Canter E-CELL to bring them a step closer toward achieving a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions under the "Shaping Future Transportation" initiative of the Daimler group.
