Bridgestone Co. launched a product named Ecopia EP100S in its new ECOPIA line of eco-friendly tires on June 25, 2010. The tire has the top AAA rating for rolling resistance based on the "Guidelines for the Evaluation (labeling system) of Fuel-Efficient Tire Promotion."
The labeling system (display method) is an original industry standard established by the Japan Automobile Tyre Manufactures Association (JATMA) to certify low fuel consumption tires that meet certain criteria for both rolling resistance and wet grip performance. The system was introduced in January 2010.
The product has a rolling resistance that is 39 percent lower when compared to conventional products, and the product was therefore given the AAA grade in rolling resistance performance. About 90 percent of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions discharged during the life cycle of a tire come from automobile fumes while the tire is used for driving. The company therefore aims to reduce CO2 emissions by improving the tires' rolling resistance, thereby improving fuel efficiency.
