New Personnel Service Provides Workers for Universities

Keywords: Education Non-manufacturing industry University / Research institute Well-Being

Responding to changing needs of society and universities, Kantou Employment Creation Organization, Inc. was launched in January, 2005, to provide a comprehensive personnel support program for universities and junior colleges. The organization, sponsored by major corporations such as Pasona Inc. and Canon Inc., benefits from a network of 85 major companies.

Competition among Japanese universities to attract students is getting tough due to the declining birthrate, aging population, and the government-orchestrated shift in status from being state-sponsored universities to independent quasi-public corporations. The organization prepares skilled workers from various companies and introduces them as potential workers to universities and junior colleges as these schools try to meet the need for more efficient management, better administration and greater uniqueness.

This program also addresses the new social phenomenon in Japan of growing numbers of young people who are unemployed and not seeking employment (nicknamed "NEET," for "not in education, employment or training"), estimated at 850,000 as of April 1, 2005. Temporary staff services and education- and publishing-related companies are operating websites for job-hunting students, and provide career and education counseling services at universities and junior colleges.
