Japanese, U.S. Students Discuss Sustainable Society

Keywords: Education NGO / Citizen University / Research institute

The US-Japan Student Conference on the Environment was held in Tokyo on June 8, 2004, jointly hosted by the University of Kansas and Japan for Sustainability (JFS). Nine Americans from the University of Kansas and 14 Japanese from several universities actively exchanged their opinions under the theme, "Creating a Sustainable Society from Students' Perspectives."

The students made presentations on the current environmental activities of their national governments, communities and universities. Then they exchanged opinions on what should be done at these three levels to realize a sustainable society in 50 years. They also discussed differences between the two countries and common visions of a sustainable society.

The idea of this student conference started with a request from Dr. Patricia Graham, a University of Kansas professor and a subscriber of the JFS monthly newsletter on environmental issues. She was planning to visit Japan with her students, and hoping for an opportunity for them to exchange ideas with JFS members. JFS gladly responded by organizing the conference.

Encouraged by the result, JFS is planning another meeting during the U.S.'s 2005 school year. JFS will continue to further promote public awareness of sustainability and related activities, not only by providing information on its website, but also by creating opportunities for face-to-face discussions.
