High Levels of Dioxins in Birds: Ministry Report

Keywords: Chemicals Government

Japan's Ministry of the Environment completed a report of its 2000 fiscal year findings on the accumulation of dioxins in wildlife and the state of human exposure. The report indicates that the highest concentrations were found in birds, followed by marine mammals and the lowest were found in land mammals, the same tendencies as the previous year. The estimated human exposure using an arithmetic average value is 2.3pg-TEQ/kg bw/day. These findings correspond to the established estimate that approximately 90 percent of dioxins accumulating in human bodies are from the intake of food.
