The National Institute for Material Science (NIMS) announced on May 14, 2012, that it has created a light-emitting liquid that emits white light at room temperature. The material can be prepared by simply adding a small amount of solid dyes to a nonvolatile blue light-emitting liquid that can be coated on substrate, which then emits a very bright white light.
While this innovative invention is highly expected to replace the common incandescent light bulb and fluorescent tube, it is also expected to serve as a new light-emitting material for use in the next generation of printable electronics, since processing the liquid to emit full-color light is so easily accomplished.
