East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) announced on April 10, 2012, that it will use only light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for internal lighting in E233-series trains to be introduced on its Saikyo and Yokohama lines--a company first. JR East says that, by replacing conventional fluorescent lights with LED bulbs, it can reduce electricity consumption in trains by about 60 percent.

The E233 series is a commuter and suburban train type, first introduced in fiscal 2006 for rapid service on the Chuo Line, and later used on such lines as the Keihin-Tohoku, Joban local, Keiyo, and Tokaido. The new trains to be introduced on the Saikyo and Yokoyama lines will be the first E233 series to have all LEDs for internal lighting. These trains will start running on the Saikyo Line in fiscal 2013 and on the Yokohama Line in fiscal 2014.
