Sagawa Express Co., a major home delivery company in Japan, introduced Biz-Navi, the industry's first car navigation system dedicated to home delivery vehicles, on July 1, 2010, in order to increase efficiency and decrease environmental burden. The system was jointly developed by the company, its subsidiary, SG SYSTEMS Co., and ZENRIN-DataCom Co. Sagawa plans to introduce 3,037 units in fiscal 2010.
The features of Biz-Navi include: 1. A collective display of all delivery locations on the same screen, allowing the most appropriate route to be selected; 2. An automatic display of the nearest five locations from a chosen point on the map as the next proposed deliveries; 3. Notification of time-specified deliveries by an time alert function; 4. Visualization of delivery progress by displaying the number of deliveries planned, completed and uncompleted because of the resident's absence; 5. Alarm sounds made when the driver approaches certain locations, such as those with higher accident rates.
Prior to its official launch, the company performed a test comparing Biz-Navi and non-Biz-Navi cars delivering the same number of parcels on the same route in each area. The results showed a substantial improvement of delivery efficiency; the time required was reduced by 21 percent, the running distance was reduced by 34 percent, and the fuel consumption was reduced by 34 percent.
As reductions in fuel consumption also reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, the company expects substantial environmental benefits with the introduction of Biz-Navi.
