Utsunomiya University of Japan (UU) held the opening ceremony on February 18, 2010, of its new educational facility, UU Sustainable Village, which is designed to be a model for future farming villages by incorporating renewable energy for sustainable food production.

The UU Sustainable Village will allow students to learn the skills and technologies for renewable energy and energy-efficient food production. The buildings are modeled after traditional Japanese houses in an agricultural society and utilize renewable energy for sustainable food production. Such facilities are rare in the world.

The UU Sustainable Village consists of (1) an "Eco-Farmer's House" with 10-Kilowatt photovoltaic panels and a weather monitoring system, (2) an "Eco-Green House" utilizing a high-performance heat pump for efficient indoor climate control, and (3) a "Plant Factory" which is a clean room using artificial light (LED) to grow plants, and is equipped with a comprehensive system to control and monitor these facilities.
