Toyobo Co., a major Japanese textile manufacturer, and the Suntory group's Suntory Logistics announced on January 7, 2010, the launch of a cooperative transportation program aimed at lowering the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of both companies. Coordinated by Toyobo Logistics Co., a subsidiary of Toyobo, and Suntory Logistics, the joint operation is expected to result in an annual reduction of about 100 tons CO2 emissions in total.

Toyobo and Suntory both operate trucks on highway routes to deliver their products, and now cooperate by carrying each other's products -- Toyobo's films and Suntory's beverages -- in their empty trucks on return trips by optimizing their logistics operations. The companies agreed to introduce the joint operation after first conducting a feasibility study, in which they analyzed their logistics data to identify candidate routes where trucks were making return trips empty.

The two companies say they are considering expanding the cooperative transportation scheme nationwide and handling more items, while Toyobo has also recently announced another cooperative transportation agreement with Sumitomo Chemical.
