NEC Develops Environmentally Friendly Flame-Retardant Bioplastic

NEC Corp., a leading Japanese electronics company, announced on November 4, 2009, the successful development and practical use of a flame-retardant bioplastic, Nucycle, which is one of the most environmentally friendly bioplastics in the world. The company plans to commercialize personal computers (PCs) made using Nucycle in 2010.

Composed of more than 75 percent plant-based material, the new bioplastic emits only half the carbon dioxide during its life cycle, as compared to existing petroleum-based plastics. In addition, their proprietary technology achieved high flame retardancy without the need for halogenated flame retardants, which have potential environmental concerns.

In recent years, bioplastics have been increasingly used in daily products, including fibers and utensils, and such durable products as electronics and automobiles. However, PCs and other electronics that have complex shapes require highly advanced flame retardancy to prevent fire, as well as high heat-resistance, durability and moldability. This is why petroleum-based plastics that have such features have mainly been used.

NEC has succeeded in developing a highly environmentally friendly and practical bioplastic (polylactic acid composite) by using its unique flame retardancy technology and enhancing practicality in cooperation with Kao Corp., a major Japanese manufacturer of personal care and cleaning products. NEC plans to use the new bioplastic in manufacturing a line of green products, ECO Symbol Star products.
