Fifty-seven student groups from around Japan participated in the sixth annual national college environmental activity contest, called "Ecocon 2008", ("con" being an abbreviation of "contest") which was held at the National Olympics Memorial Center in Tokyo on December 22 and 23, 2008. Coordinated by an executive committee, in cooperation with Tokyo Electric Power Co. and Japan Youth Ecology League, an environmental non-governmental organization, the Ecocon event is aimed at promoting the environmental activities of students by facilitating exchanges and presentations.

The student presentations at Ecocon are judged, using an open voting system, by people working in environmental fields, students from around the nation, and general audience members. Of the eight groups selected in the first stage of voting, the "Econex Nagoya" project group won first prize for their efforts to turn Nagoya into a more eco-friendly city by promoting material reuse and a "candle night" event.

Besides the contest, there is also a another meeting stream at Ecocon called "Ecott" (ecocon TALK) to exchange and share ideas or know-how on activities between students and working people. The successful Ecott meeting series is separated into seven different categories based on themes such as environmental employment, environmental efforts in college, fieldwork around the Center, and a review discussion of activities.
