New Diffusing Lens Reduces Use of LED Lights

Keywords: Eco-business / Social Venture Environmental Technology Manufacturing industry

Enplas Corp., a leading electrical equipment manufacturer in Japan, announced on August 28, 2008, that it has launched mass-production of a diffusing lens, patented so far only in Japan, along with a lens module, which together can reduce the number of light emitting diodes (LEDs) needed in advertising displays.

The diffusing lens, which was developed by utilizing unique technologies of luminous control and ultra-precision machining, helps to make an LED's luminosity uniform by better diffusing the light emitted. Using this approach, the new lens allows a one-third reduction in the number of LED lighting sources usually needed. This also results in an almost 60 percent reduction of carbon dioxide emissions compared to fluorescent lights.

Enplas sells the diffusing lens alone or in an LED-incorporated lens module. Use of the lens has already been adopted at some public transportation sites in Japan. The company aims to expand sales of its products to convenience stores and other stores for their billboards, information boards, and signboards.
