Japanese Gov't Releases Guidebook on Eco-Friendly Use of Info and Communication Technology (ICT)

Keywords: Environmental Technology Government

Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) released a guidebook, entitled "Environment-Friendly Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Use," on April 6, 2007.

MIC compiled the guidebook based on a study report prepared by the ministry's Study Group on ICT System and Network for Reducing Environmental Impacts, in March 2007. The guidebook consist of the following three sections: (1) environmental impacts of ICT systems, (2) ICT that enables the simultaneous pursuit of economic growth, convenience, and environmental considerations, and (3) suggestions on how to use ICT systems in environment-friendly ways.

Using checklists, the guidebook shows effective ways to limit negative environmental impacts when introducing, operating, or disposing of ICT systems, and ways to enhance positive impacts by reducing the movement of people or goods through the use of ICT. The 27-page document is available only in Japanese.
