Keywords: Environmental Technology Manufacturing industry University / Research institute Water

Hokkaido University and Fuji Electric Holdings Co. agreed on July 1, 2004 to develop cutting-edge technologies by combining the university's intellectual strength with the company's product development capabilities.

Hokkaido University has been focusing on nanotechnology and biotechnology as well as environmental sciences, covering the water environment and hydrogen energy. The university has been recognized for its achievements relating to aquatic environments and is seen in Japan and internationally as a top-class institute in studies on metabolic systems involving water and waste.

Meanwhile, Fuji Electric aims to expand its business into new areas of water management and water treatment processing, such as in advanced methods of sewage treatment, membrane water treatment and sludge treatment, adding to its existing main business of electronic measuring instruments.

The collaborative program will focus on issues relating to aquatic environments and energy, two fields that are expected to become increasingly important. As a first step, the partners will begin to develop innovative technologies relating to water treatment processes using membranes and phosphorus collection for water recycling.
