"Velotaxis," pollution-free pedicabs developed in Germany, are up and running on the main streets in downtown Tokyo.

The Ecological-Cities Promoting Association, a Kyoto-based nonprofit organization, introduced the velotaxis in Kyoto. Since the operation of the velotaxis gained popularity among the Kyotoites, the organization has expanded its service into Tokyo and now operates 20 velotaxis around the trendy Omotesando and Minami-Aoyama area.

The fare is 300 yen (US$2.50) for adults and children aged six years old and over, 200 yen (US$1.67) for children aged two to five years old, and free for children under two. The taxis display advertisements designed by the sponsors that aim to promote their corporate images as environmental conscious companies.
