Survey firm MACROMILL, Inc. conducted an online survey aimed at residents aged 20 and older living in the Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) service area about their efforts to conserve electricity since the Great East Japan Earthquake. Conducted April 7 and 8, 2011 (500 responses) and released April 15, 2011, the survey found that 71% of respondents had changed their lifestyles to help save electricity.

When questioned about specific changes, respondents said they were "staying home more" (48%), "staying more often with the family together in one room" (32%), "getting around by bicycle or on foot" (30%), "getting to bed and rising earlier" (25%), and "going home earlier" (17%), showing that many have cooperated with measures to save energy by adjusting their schedules.

To the question on impacts that electricity-saving measures affecting transportation systems and other facilities were having on their lives, about 60% said these were "causing them inconvenience" but accepted that it's "inevitable for a while longer." The survey also found 51% said they "didn't make efforts to save electricity before the earthquake but at present are doing so." The number of people that had cut their electricity consumption reached 95% including 41% of respondents who said they have been cutting their electricity consumption before the earchquake. The main things they did at home to save electricity included turning off all unneeded lights, setting air conditioners to lower temperatures, and unplugging appliances when not in use. The survey also showed that over 40% of respondents were making plans to prepare for the coming summer electricity shortage.
