6 CLEAN WATER & SANITATION

Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

Status in Japan

  • Japan's 2015 revised drinking water quality standards list 51 items.

  • Over 90% of rivers in Japan met environmental standards, in contrast to only 40% to 50% of lakes and marshes. Further improvements are needed.

Updates on Government Policies in Japan

  • In May 2014, the Act to Advance the Utilization of Rainwater went into force (developed by Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism).
  • In June 1999, the New National Comprehensive Water Resources Plan (Water Plan 21) was formulated by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
